Abstract :   ABSTRACT Malaria is holoendemic in Nigeria where parasite transmission is influenced by geographic, climatic, demographic and socio-economic factors. Malaria and its associated risk factors were studied among a cross section of Iyiowa-Odekpe community between November 2017 and May 2018. Out of 413 blood samples examined for malaria parasitaemia, 266 (64.4%) were positive for Rapid Diagnostic Test while 254 (62.1%) were positive for Microscopy, which confirmed Plasmodium falciparum to be the causative agent in Iyiowa-Odekpe. Age and blood groups, seasons of the year, non-use of long-lasting insecticidal nets, and the habit of late-night outdoor-activities were useful predictors of malaria observed in the area. Despite roll-out of malaria interventions in Nigeria, Iyiowa-Odekpe was experiencing intense malaria transmission. Innovative programmes are therefore needed to instill proper usage of bed nets, as well as the adoption of other vector control measures that will substantially reduce malaria transmission in Iyiowa-Odekpe.
