Parasitic gastrointestinal helminths and protozoa in pigs at Enugu, Nigeria

Abstract : Pigs are reared in Enugu for meat while their skins, hairs, bones provide raw-materials for leather, brushes and bone-meal production, respectively. Pigs infected by parasites suffer from poor health and lowered production; leading to economic losses and transmission of zoonoses. This study was on gastrointestinal tract (GIT) helminth and protozoa parasites of intensively-reared pigs in 4 suburbs at Enugu. The objectives were to determine the prevalence of GIT-helminths and protozoa parasites of the pigs. Four hundred pigs (100 from each suburb namely, Abakpa, Awkunanaw, Emene, and Ninth-Mile) comprising 198 males and 202 females from among 21 piglets, 194 growers and 185 finishers were randomly selected, routinely examined for GIT-helminths and protozoa parasites.
